Upon completion of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Identify the components of team building and digital curation that are necessary to begin working towards a curation prototype in your institution.
  • Pinpoint areas to invest in locally to build knowledge and skills to meet the needs of a digital repository program at your institution.
  • Review existing digital repository characteristics that best illustrate roads to success.
  • Gain access to resources, guides, models, and best practices relevant to the digital curation/repository landscape.

Description:

This one day workshop will introduce key preservation concepts for archivists. Whatever the size or range of an archives’ holdings, preservation planning can help prolong the useful life of all collections. The workshop will focus on basic theory and direct, practical applications of this information. Attendees will learn about:

  • Appropriate environmental conditions for paper-based records, books, audio-visual materials, and other physical holdings.
  • Housing and storage for archival conditions: from shelving to file folders.
  • Risks for archival holdings: disasters, pests, mold, and security.
  • Use and exhibition of archival collections.

As these concepts are discussed, attendees will consider how information is relevant to archival activities such as appraisal, processing, and patron use. While this is not a hands-on workshop, participation by all attendees will be strongly encouraged and attendees are welcome to bring questions and dilemmas they face in preserving their collections.

About the Presenter:

Kristen St.John has been the Collections Conservator for the UCLA Library since 2004. She holds an MLIS and an advanced certificate in conservation from the University of Texas at Austin's Preservation and Conservation Studies program. She has worked with special collections and archives throughout her career in institutions such as UCLA, Rutgers University Libraries, the Indiana Historical Society, the Library of Congress, and at Information Conservation Inc. Along with conservation work she has done preservation assessments for library and archival collections in small museums and historical societies.
