Introduction to Archives Management

Tuesday, November 5th, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Center for Sacramento History, 551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd, Sacramento 95811

Instructor:

Nancy Lenoil was the chief archivist for the State of California from 2006-2019, and was the first woman to hold this position. Ms. Lenoil began her career with the State Archives in 1987, and became administrator of the Western Archives Institute in 1992. Ms. Lenoil is a Certified Archivist Emeritus and a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists. She has a Master of Arts degree in History with a Graduate Certificate in Archival Administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She received advanced training in archives administration through a fellowship funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

Workshop description:

Frequently, archivists find themselves the position, either by choice or circumstance, of being responsible for managing a repository, staff, projects and/or facilities. While archival education teaches about managing archival and manuscript collections, archival education programs often do not include training to be a manager. This full-day workshop will introduce basic management concepts and tools to better equipped archivist-managers to apply to day-to-day work. Participants will come away with an introductory hands on experience with archives management concepts; ideas on how to apply those concepts in their work as archivist-managers such as managing resources; and knowledge and strategies for continued learning about management in an archives setting.

Who should attend:

This workshop is ideal for anyone who currently manages or would like to manage a repository, staff, programs, projects and/or facilities.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants so please register as soon as possible to secure your spot.

Registration open until October 29, 2019.

The Walter P. Gray III Education Endowment Fund Scholarship offers funds up to $500 for registration and travel to SCA workshops. Submit an application form, including a proposed budget to Jennifer Martinez Wormser (jmwormse@scrippscollege.edu). Application forms and additional information are available here.
